This incident occurred one morning outside Albert Sch-weitzer’s hospital in the African jungle.A patient had gone fishing in another man’s boat. The owner of the boat thought he should begiven all the fish that were caught. Dr. Sch-weitzer said to the boat owner:

“You are right because the other man ought to have asked permission to use your boat. Butyou are wrong because you are careless and lazy. You merely twisted the chain of your canoeround a palm tree instead of fastening it with a padlock. Of laziness you are guilty because youwere asleep in your hut on this moonlit night instead of making use of the good opportunityfor fishing.”

He turned to the patient: “But you were in the wrong when you took the boat without askingthe owner’s permission. You were in the right because you were not so lazy as he was and youdid not want to let the moonlit night go by without making some use of it.”

Dr. Schweitzer divided the catch among the fisherman, the boat owner, and the hospital.

McDull is a male pig who can be distinguished by a birthmark on his right eye. He has a heartof gold, but he isn’t very smart and ordinary in every way; nevertheless, he has many dreams. However, every time he tries, he fails; he is disappointed, but tries again, exploring otherdreams. In this way he creates his own colourful world. He lives his life simply and naturally. Heis not perfect, but his attitude towards life, namely of never giving up, makes him a popularcharacter。

The name McDull actually has a story itself. When Mrs Mak was going to give birth to McDull, she saw a magical plastic basin (pronounced roughly as “dull” in Cantonese) flying over herhead. Immediately, she made a wish for her son and hoped he could be smart、good fate andsharp. After the wish, the basin dropped to the floor. Believing it a sign from the gods, shenamed her son as “Dull”, although it is a little weird.

In a small village, there lived a potter. He had a donkey. Everyday his donkey would carry soilfrom the field to his house. Since the field was quite far off, the potter would rest under a treemidway, tying his donkey nearby.

One day, the potter forgot to take the rope with which he tied the donkey everyday. When hereached the tree, he thought, “How do I tie this donkey today? He might run away if I sleep.”The potter decided to lie down holding the donkey’s ears so that the donkey would not runaway.

But this way neither the donkey nor the potter was able to take a rest. A saint, who happenedto be passing by, saw the potter holding on to the donkey’s ears. Then the saint wanted toknow what the problem of the potter was. When the potter told the saint what the problemwas, the wise saint said, “Take the donkey to the place where you tie him everyday. Pretend totie him using an imaginary rope. I assure you he won’t run away.” The potter did what thesaint had said.

He left the donkey and went to take a nap. When he woke up, to his surprise and relief, hefound the donkey standing in the same place.

Soon the potter prepared to leave for home. But the donkey did not move. “What is wrong withthis donkey!” exclaimed the potter in frustration.

Luckily, the potter saw the wise saint again. He ran up to the saint and told him about thedonkey’s strange behavior. The saint said, “You tied up the donkey, but did you untie him? Goand pretend to untie the rope with which you had tied the donkey.”

The potter followed the saint’s advice. Now the donkey was ready to leave for home. The potterunderstood that donkey was a bonded donkey. The potter thanked the wise saint and wenthome happily with his donkey.
