Dear Mr. President,

I am a sophomore from Department 3 and I am writing to you about the food and service in the canteen on campus.

To be frank, I am rather disappointed at the food quality, price and service in the canteen. First, the dishes are scarcely well cooked and most of them taste the same. Secondly, most of the dishes there are priced so high that some students cannot even afford them. Thirdly, the service in the canteen is far from satisfying and the inside of the canteen always seem untidy.

To solve the problem, I suggest that another canteen be built and a mechanism of competition be introduced between the old and the new. Besides, both the canteens should be subject to the students' supervision.

Dining is an everyday issue for students. It may affect their academic performance. Therefore, I sincerely hope this letter can draw your attention to the matter and I hope the problems mentioned above can be solved as soon as possible.

i am li ming, a second year student in the education department of ouf university. i'm writing to inform you of the true conditions of our canteen service.

i don't know how to begin my account because the service is really bad. please read my letter patiently and do something about it. we would be grateful for whatever you do for us students.

firstly, the quality of the food is bad. for instance, the rice is too hard. what's more, some dishes are not fresh sometimes. as a matter of fact, the poor food has already caused some stomach problems among the students.

secondly, the service is not good enough. some staff members give us short measure when they are in a bad mood. now and then they behave like robbers, robbing you of your appetite. worst of alit they never smile.

thirdly, the price is too high. a small cake made from rice and dates cost as much as 0.6 yuan! it will cost us a good 6 yuan to fill our stomach with such cakes. after all we are poor students.

i wish my opinion would call your attention to the canteen service on campus. we are badly in need of your help.

looking forward to an early reply.

The Cafeteria

The once-seen-everywhere cafeteria tray, with so many glasses of soda, juice and milk lined up across the top, could soon join the typewriter as a campus relic scores of colleges and universities across the country are shelving the Uays in hopesof conserving water, curting food waste and saving money. Some even believe tray-less cafeterias could help avoid the dieaded " freshman 15" - the number of pounds supposedly gained in the first year on campus.

The Sustainable Endowments Institutechenefit.

But while the environmental henefits are real, going trayless is not a cure-all. At Skidmore, she all-you-can-eat format and multiplc food stations, fea turing vegetahles, Italian and classic. comfoods, encourage students to look around, taking a bit of this and a little of that.

But this system also leads to over-crowded ning halls as diners return to the lines for seconds.

As part of her senior honors thesis, Sarah Whateley, an iducted a research enwronmenlal sludies major. cnndu ch project to rlemonstrate how much food was slill wasted in the dining hall. She asked students to put their leflovers into plastic bins over hw days, yield in 330 pounrls of food on a Sunday and 403 pounds on a Monday. The food services staff then inustrated that quantity by stacking ffie equivalent weight in boxes of rice in the entrance of the dining hall.

Dr. Spina of the coUege food service association, cited another benefit: "You eventually have to learn how to hold your horsd'oeuvre and cocktail in one hand while making conversation wiLh the other, so it's a life lesson."
