Brandon Branson's Backpack
Brandon Branson's backpack
is unusually large.
He drags it into school
the way a tugboat drags a barge.
The main compartment holds
about a hundred hardback books.
The outside has a zillion
little pockets, strap and hooks.
Inside it has his calculators,
one for every class,
plus eighty markers, pens and pencils,
adding to it's mass.
It holds his new harmonica
plus three or four kazoos,
his binder and his lunchbox
and an extra pair of shoes.
Of course it has his mittens
with his winter coat and hat,
a soccer ball, a basketball,
a baseball glove and bat.
A CD player, headphones,
and a TV, with remote,
a telephone, computer,
and another hat and coat.
His skateboard and his scooter
have their own equipment rack.
It even has a space to park
his bicycle in back.
A teacher found it in the hall
She looked around for Brandon
who was nowhere to be seen.
She got some other teachers
who considered it and frowned,
then groaned and moaned and pulled
and dragged it off to lost and found.
They struggled through the doorway
feeling out of breath and strained,
and all of them were curious
to see what it contained.
They cautiously unzipped it
and they pulled it open wide,
and there was Brandon Branson
napping happily inside.

Underwater Sandwich
My sandwich is soggy and falling apart.
The crust and the lettuce are floating away.
I guess that it probably wasn't too smart
to play with it here in the bathtub today.
They served them today in the lunchroom at school.
I saved mine through English and Science and Math,
then carried it home thinking won't it be cool
to play with my sandwich upstairs in the bath.
But now the baloney is starting to sink.
The mustard and mayo dissolved in the tub.
It's puzzling, but I am beginning to think
my "submarine sandwich" was not a real sub.

I Went to School to Learn to Read
I went to school to learn to read,
but learned instead of trouts in tweed.
I thought they'd show us how to write.
They showed a fig could fly a kite.
Instead of having history class
we caught gorillas in a glass,
then didn't learn arithmetic,
but watched as Tuesday did a trick.
We also skipped geography
to learn why eggs can disagree.
And then, instead of taking art,
we learned to take the air apart.
Instead of having science there,
we played with pigs with purple hair.
We learned to catch a savage chair
and why balloons are really square.
We learned the moon can eat the sun
and why bananas like to run.
It's true, we may get nothing done,
but, boy, it sure is lots of fun.
