One day, Zhuang Zi went to pay his respects to Ai Gong, King of the State of Lu.
Ai Gong said: "There are many Confucian scholars in our country, but very few study your Taoist doctrines1."
Zhuang Zi retorted: "The actual situation is not like what you said. In fact, there are very few Confucian scholars in the State of Lu."
Hearing this, Ai Gong replied by asking a question: "How can you say there are very few Confucian scholars in the State of Lu, when all the people in the state wear the clothes of Confucian scholars?"
Zhuang Zi said: "I hear that Confucian scholars who wear round-shaped hats understand the weather and climate; those who wear square-shaped shoes understand geography; those who wear colourful jade2 can make prompt decisions in dealing3 with matters. But people who really have the particular kind of knowledge do not necessarily wear the very kind of clothes, whereas those who wear the very kind of clothes do not necessarily have the particular kind of knowledge. If you think what I said is wrong, you can issue an order to the whole country: `Anyone who does not understand Confucian doctrines but wears Confucian clothes will be sentenced to death without exception.' Try and see what the result would be."
Ai Gong did issue such an order. Five days later, to his surprise, no one in the country dared to wear Confucian clothes any longer. Only one man wearing Confucian clothes stood outside the palace gate. Ai Gong immediately summoned him and inquired of him about state affairs. As expected, this man answered the questions readily and fluently, clearly and logically.
Zhuang Zi said: "The State of Lu is the native place of Confucianism, but there is only one Confucian scholar. How can you say that there are many Confucian scholars in the State of Lu?"
In the State of Zheng, there was a man who wanted to go into town to buy a pair of new shoes.
Before leaving home, he measured his foot with a piece of straw1 for size. After he arrived at the town and entered a shoeshop, he put his hand into his pocket only to find that in his haste2 he had left the measurement3 at home. Thereupon, he turned round andstarted for home. But when he rushed back to the shoeshop with the measurement, the shop had closed. As a result, he had busied himself for nothing.
Later, someone asked him: "Were you buying shoes for yourself or for others?"
He answered: "For myself."
Someone else asked him: "Don't you have your feet on yourself? You need only to try on shoes with your feet to get the right size. Why did you go back home to fetch the measurement?"
The man of Zheng insisted: "I would rather trust the measurement than my own feet."
there was once a Prince who wished to marry aPrincess; but then she must be a real Princess. Hetravelled all over the world in hopes of finding such alady; but there was always something wrong.Princesses he found in plenty; but whether theywere real Princesses it was impossible for him todecide, for now one thing, now another, seemedto him not quite right about the ladies. At last hereturned to his palace quite cast down, because hewished so much to have a real Princess for his wife.
One evening a fearful tempest arose, it thundered and lightened, and the rain poureddown from the sky in torrents: besides, it was as dark as pitch. All at once there was heard aviolent knocking at the door, and the old King, the Prince's father, went out himself toopen it.
It was a Princess who was standing outside the door. What with the rain and the wind, she was in a sad condition; the water trickled down from her hair, and her clothes clung to herbody. She said she was a real Princess.
“Ah! we shall soon see that!” thought the old Queen-mother; however, she said not aword of what she was going to do; but went quietly into the bedroom, took all the bed-clothes off the bed, and put three little peas on the bedstead. She then laid twenty mattressesone upon another over the three peas, and put twenty feather beds over the mattresses.
Upon this bed the Princess was to pass the night.
the next morning she was asked how she had slept. “Oh, very badly indeed!” she replied. “I have scarcely closed my eyes the whole night through. I do not know what was in my bed,but I had something hard under me, and am all over black and blue. It has hurt me so much!”
Now it was plain that the lady must be a real Princess, since she had been able to feel thethree little peas through the twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds. None but a realPrincess could have had such a delicate sense of feeling.
the Prince accordingly made her his wife; being now convinced that he had found a realPrincess. The three peas were however put into the cabinet of curiosities, where they are stillto be seen, provided they are not lost.
Wasn't this a lady of real delicacy?
