Some people say bare-root(裸根种植的) roses are difficult to grow. Buy you have a good chance of success if you start with a few suggestions from experts.
You can buy bare-root roses from a garden center or by mail order. Jeffrey Dinslage, president of Nature Hills Nursery in Omaha, Nebraska, points out that bare-root roses come without soil so they are very light.
Jeffrey Dinslage advises getting bare-root roses as close to planting time as you can. If they arrive before you are ready to plant them, make sure the packing material is wet. Keep the plants in a cool and dark place and choose to plant the roses while they are dormant(休眠的). The plants that are in dormant condition have no leaves but still need water.
When planting roses, you should keep the soil wet deep down. And the process of watering roses should be done in the morning so that problems called black spot and mildew(霉病) can be prevented. But too not water too much. Jeffrey Dinslage says people often ask him about unhealthy spots on rose leaves. He says the spots are usually caused by too much water. After heavy rains or too much watering, he advises placing covers around rose plants is a good idea because it helps hold water in the soil. But if heavy rains happened, covers would be a kind of trouble tat keeps too much water in the soil which could cause plant diseases.
If your soil is very dry, you can add compost(混合肥料), which returns what helps roses grow healthily to the soil. If insects appear to destroy your roses, you may be able to spray(喷) strong water to force them off. You should plant your roses where they can get sunshine for about six hours on bright days.

Now a study of thousands of members of a retirement community in Southern California is showing things that may contribute to living longer. Some of the findings are no surprise—smoking led to shorter lifspans(寿命), while those who exercised lived longer. Other findings were unexpected—vitamins did not lengthen life, but carried some extra weight.
Dr. Claudia Kawas found the research equivalent to(相当于) a gold mine when she let 14,000 retired people fill out detailed questionnaires(问卷). In the questionnaires, they were asked about their diet, activities, vitamin intake and medical history back in the early 1980s.
“People who exercised definitely lived longer than people who didn’t. as little as 15 minutes a day on average made a difference,” says Dr. Kawas. Keeping active in non-physical ways, such as socializing, playing board games, and attending book clubs, also contributed to a longer life.
“for every hour you sent doing activities, you made your life longer, and the benefits of those things never made you down,” she says, Kawas tells the reporter that being fat at any age is unhealthy. However, she found that older people who were a little overweight or average weight lived longer than people who were extremely underweight. “it’’re old,” Dr. Kawas says.
Vitamins didn’t seen to affect lifespans, but alcohol did, with people who drank up to two drinks per day having a 10-15 percent reduced risk of death compared to non-drinkers.
One of the biggest surprises so far in the study is that 40 percent of the time, what seemed to be Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔茨海默病) in people over 90 actually wasn’t. the researchers learned this by studying the brains of people after death; many showed evidence of strokes(中风). Kawas says she hasn’t yet figured out what caused the strokes, so she can’t say how to prevent them . she tells Stahl, “I wish I did. But I will soon.”
