英语晨读美文精选:Pets

Americans love pets. And it's not just puppy love, either. Many pet owners treat their furryfriends as part of the family. Sometimes they spice up their pets' lives with entertainingvideos and amusing toys. If they have an eye for fashion, pet owners can dress their pets instylish clothes. For special occasions, they can use perfume to make their dogs smell, well,less beastly.

You might say Americans treat their pets like they treat their children-sometimes even better.In America, there are more households with pets than those with children. At least 43 percentof U.S. homes have pets of some sort. Unusual creatures, such as monkeys, snakes and evenwolves, find a home with some Americans. More common pets include tropical fish, mice andbirds. But the all-time favorites are cats and dogs, even at the White House. President GeorgeW. Bush has three dogs and two cats under care. Americans sometimes have strong feelingsabout whether dogs or cats make better pets. "Dog people" and "cat people" often enjoy friendlyrivalries.

Leading a dog's life in America isn't such a bad thing. Many grocery stores sell gourmet petfoods to owners eager to please their pets. In Houston, Texas, dogs can have their dinnerdelivered to their homes, just like pizza. Well-to-do dogs can attend doggy daycare centerswhile their owners work. Pets can even accompany their owners on vacation. Fancy hotels arebeginning to accommodate both man and beast. Furry guests at Four Seasons Hotels canenjoy gourmet meals served on fine china and sleep in soft beds.

Beneath the luxuries, there lies a basic American belief: Pets have a right to be treated well. Atleast 75 animal welfare organizations exist in America. These provide care and adoption servicesfor homeless and abused animals. Veterinarians can give animals an incredible level of medicalcare for an incredible price. To pay for the high-tech health care, people can buy healthinsurance for their pets. And when it's time to say good-bye, owners can bury their pets in arespectable pet cemetery.

The average American enjoys having pets around, and for good reason. Researchers havediscovered that interacting with animals lowers a person's blood pressure. Dogs can offerprotection from burglars and unwelcome visitors. Cats can help rid the home of unwantedpests. Little creatures of all shapes and sizes can provide companionship and love.

In many cases, having a pet prepares a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood. Petseven encourage social relationships: They give their owners an appearance of friendliness,and they provide a good topic of conversation. Pets are as basic to American culture as hotdogs or apple pie. To Americans, pets are not just property, but a part of the family. After all,pets are people, too.

英语晨读美文精选:Drive-in Cinema

Motion pictures are most popular not only in the United States, but throughout the world.

Although color television and video recording are gaining greater popularity and may bethreatening the future of the movies, motion pictures have somewhat managed to cope withthe film crisis in the seventies and remain one of the favorite forms of entertainment of thepeople.

There are 11,000 motion picture theaters, or cinema, and about 4,000 outdoor "drive-ins",where people sit in their own automobiles and watch domestic and foreign films. Heavy use ofthe highways in the United States has resulted in the rapid development of what we callroadside business of various kinds, including outdoor movie theaters, or drive-ins, and motels.Both outdoor drive-ins and motels are usually located on main roads near cities and at seasideand other resort areas.

In a drive-in, an enormous screen is put up in an open space, and the cars are all parkedfacing the screen in long rows. When you have parked, you may open the car window and bringin the instrument that is being handed over to you which gives the sound that accompaniesthe picture, and perhaps bring in a heater, too. If it is cold, you may well shut the windowagain, with the sound-reproducing device inside the car, so that you can hear while watchingthe big screen in front of your car. Drive-in cinemas usually have some kind of cafe in the area,and you can buy Coca-Cola and coffee to drink in the car.

The first drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933 in Camden, New Jersey. Newspapers of the periodsuggested that the automobile movie theater was an immediate success. On the opening nightit was jammed to capacity with six hundred cars. The initial advertisement didn't mention thename of the film to be shown that night, and the people didn't care. The real attraction wasclearly the theater itself. Since that night, drive-ins have been welcomed by the people acrossthe whole country.

英语晨读美文精选:Persistence

Persistence is the key to success, whether for a single person or an organization. The lack of it would mean failure in reaching a certain goal. Success seldom comes easily on the first try. What separates the successful from the unsuccessful is persistence. Successful people also fail from time to time, but they don’t let their failure defeat their spirit. Successful people learn from defeats, revise their strategy as needed and try again and again until they succeed. Unsuccessful people try something once or twice and when it fails, they give up, usually passing the blame on to someone or something else, and learn nothing from their own experience.

Successful people expect periodic defeats, learn what went wrong and why, don’t waste looking for someone to blame, make necessary adjustments, and try again. If you are persistent, you will almost inevitably succeed. If you are not persistent, you will almost certainly fail.

英语晨读美文精选:We Are on a Journey

Wherever you are, and whoever you may be,

there is one thing in which you and I are

just alike,at this moment, and in all the moments

of our existence.We are not at rest;

we are on a journey. Our life is not a mere fact;

it is a movement, a tendency, a steady,

ceaseless progress towards an unseen goal.

We are gaining something, or losing something, every day.

Even when our position and our character seem to

remain precisely the same, they are changing.

For the mere advance of time is a change.

It is not the same thing to have a bare field

in January and in July. The season makes the difference.

The limitations that are childlike in the child are childish

in the man.Everything that we do is a step

in one direction or another. Even the failure to do something

is in itself a deed. It sets us forward or backward.

The action of the negative pole of a magnetic needle is

just as real as the action of the positive pole.

To decline is to accept — the other alternative.

Are you nearer to your port today than you were yesterday?

Yes, — you must be a little nearer to some port or other;

for since your ship was first launched upon

the sea of life you have never been still

for a single moment; the sea is too deep,

you could not find an anchorage if you would;

there can be no pause until you come into port.
