2017高考英语短文篇一
With the tears streaming down her face, she put her two hands to her lips, and kissed them to him; then clasped(紧握) them on her breast,as if she laid his ruined head there.
“You are not the jailer's daughter?”
She sighed, “No.”
“Who are you?”
Not yet trusting the tones of her voice, she sat down on the bench beside him.He drew back but she laid her hand upon his arm.A strange thrill struck him when she did so, and visibly passed over his frame; he laid the knife down softly,as he sat staring at her.
Her golden hair, which she wore in long curls, had been hurriedly pushed aside, and fell down over her neck.Advancing his hand by little and little,he took it up and looked at it.In the middle of the action he went astray, and, with another deep sigh, fell to work at his shoemaking.
But not for long.Releasing his arm,she laid her hand upon his shoulder. After looking doubtfully at it,two or three times,as if to be sure that it was really there,he laid down his work, put his hand to his neck, and took off a blackened string with a scrap of folded rag attached to it.
He opened this, carefully,on his knee, and it contained a very little quantity of hair:not more than one or two long golden hairs, which he had,in some old day, wound on upon his finger.
He took her hair into his hand again, and looked closely at it.“It is the same. How can it be! When was it! How was it!”
As the concentrating expression returned to his forehead,he seemed to become conscious that it was in hers too.He turned her full to the light, and looked at her.
“She had laid her head upon my shoulder, that night when I was summoned(传唤)out—she had a fear of my going, though I had none—and when I was brought to the North Tower they found these upon my sleeve.‘You will leave me them? They can never help me to escape in the body, though they may in the spirit.’ Those were the words I said.I remember them very well.”
He formed this speech with his lips many times before he could utter it.But when he did find spoken words for it,they came to him coherently(连贯地),though slowly.

Henry Ford grew up on an unelectrified farm, and as a young man he followed Edison's career as the inventor became a national role model. Ford took a job at the Edison Illuminating Company, working his way up to chief engineer.
In 1896 Ford was thirtythree and, though still working for Edison Co., he had created his first experimental automobile—the Ford Quadricycle2 during his offtime. At an Edison company party in New York, Ford had his first chance to meet his hero Edison and was able to explain his new automobile to the great inventor. Edison_was_impressed._Edison_is_said_to_have_slammed_his_fist_down_and_shouted,“Young man, that's the thing! You have it! Your car is selfcontained and carries its own power plant.”Edison himself had been working on the idea, but had only been considering electricity as the power source, so the idea of a gas engine was a somewhat new one.
The words comforted Ford greatly, who immediately set out building a second car which was to become the ModelT.6. The two men became friends and would go on camping trips together. When Edison later became limited to a wheelchair, Ford brought an extra one to his house so they could race.At the 50th anniversary of the invention of light bulb, Ford honoured Edison. When Edison spoke he ended his speech directed at Ford, “As to Henry Ford, words fail to express my feelings.I can only say that he is my friend.” Therefore it is no surprise that Ford wanted something to remember Edison by after he passed away in 1931.
Once, Ford asked Thomas Edison's son Charles to sit by the dying inventor's bedside and hold a test tube next to his father's mouth to catch his final breath. Ford was a man with many strange behaviours (as was Edison) including some interest in reanimation and spiritualism(复活通灵术)and some say that he was attempting to catch Edison's soul as it escaped his body in hopes of later bringing the inventor back to life.
The test tube itself didn't turn up until 1950 when it was listed in the Ford's possessions after Clara Ford's passing away, and then lost again until 1978 when it was discovered in an exhibit entitled“Henry Ford—A Personal History”in the Henry Ford Museum. It would then be discovered that the tube was labeled “Edison's Last Breath”.
There is a further mystery of this “last breath” test tube.It would seem as if Edison had quite a last breath indeed, as the Edison Estate holds a collection of 42 test tubes all supposedly containing Edison's last breath.
Regardless of the excitement over the last breath, the test tube is quite touching in its meaning.Although both men were known for all sorts of poor behaviour towards their loved ones and mistreatment of employees, between them at least, there was clearly a deep respect and admiration.

Do you have any strong opinion on co-educational or single-sex schools?
A supporter of co-educational schools would probably say that schools should be like the societies they belong to .In Hong Kong , men and women mix socially on a day-to-day basis .In many fields men are even likely to have female bosses .It is ,therefore, desirable that boys and girls grow up together ,go to school together ,and prepare themselves for a society that does not value sexual separation.
Some would go on to argue further that growing up with members of the opposite sex is important for personal development .Regular contact (接触)can remove the strange ideas about the opposite-sex and lead to more natural relationships .Single-sex conditions are seen as leading to more extreme opinions, and possibly even as encouraging homosexuality(同性恋),though there is no proof that this is the case.
Those who are against coeducation often also fix their attention on the sexual side .Some parents fear that close contact with members of the opposite sex is dangerous for teenagers .They want their children to be attentive to their studies .Such parents feel uncomfortable with modern ways and the free mixing of the sexes.
A stronger argument comes from research into school results .Girls grow up earlier than boys ,tend to be more orderly and are likely to be better at languages .In a mixed class ,boys who might do well in a single-sex class become discouraged and take on the rule of troublemaker .Certainly in the UK this situation has greatly alarmed (惊动)the government for it to be encouraging co-educational schools to have some single-sex classes .In the UK the best schools are all single-sex ,strongly suggesting that co-education is not the best answer .This may ,however ,not be as simple as it looks .It may simply be that the famous old schools that attract the best students happen to be single-sex ,rather than that being single-sex makes them better schools.
