小学睡前英语故事:The Kid on the Housetop

A kid climbed up on to the roof of an outhouse, attracted by the grass and other things that grew in the thatch(茅草); and as he stood there browsing away, he caught sight of a wolf passing below, and jeered at(嘲笑) him because he couldn't reach him.

The wolf only looked up and said, "I hear you, my young friend; but it is not you who mock(嘲弄) me, but the roof on which you are standing."

A waggoner was driving his team along a muddy lane with a full load behind them, when the wheels of his wagon sank so deep in the mire(泥沼) that no efforts of his horses could move them. As he stood there, looking helplessly on, and calling loudly at intervals upon Hercules for assistance, the god himself appeared, and said to him, "Put your shoulder to the wheel, man, and goad(刺激,煽动) on your horses, and then you may call on Hercules to assist you. If you won't lift a finger to help yourself, you can't expect Hercules or any one else to come to your aid."
