CAROL: I never understand why these shops have so much liquor.

JOHN: What do you mean? It's because it's much cheaper to buy liquor duty-free.

CAROL: But why? Why don't people like to buy shirts duty-free? Or shoes?

I just don't understand why it's always liquor.

JOHN: Well, it's because in most countries liquor has a higher tax on it.

CAROL: You mean liquor has a higher tax than other things?

JOHN: Yes, of course. Didn't you know that?

CAROL: No, I didn't. How high is the tax?

JOHN: Well, it is different in different countries.

But it's because of the high tax that buying liquor duty-free is such a good deal.

CAROL: Why would the government want to tax liquor so much?

JOHN: Liquor is considered a luxury item.

And also, it is considered as something that isn't very healthy.

So if people want to buy it, the government thinks it has the right to tax it.

CAROL: That's why a lot of people buy cigarettes here too, isn't it?

JOHN: Of course. Cigarettes are also taxed very heavily.

CAROL: Now I understand. But I don't smoke or drink.

So what am I supposed to buy in here?

JOHN: You can buy some of these nice butterflies.

CAROL: No, I'm sorry.

I don't think it is nice to have butterflies mounted in boxes.

It is kind of disgusting.

JOHN: What? You feel sorry for the butterflies?

CAROL: Yes. I think they should just let them fly free,

and not try to sell them to foreigners. It is a kind of destruction of nature.

JOHN: Well, I agree with you.

I'd rather think that the butterflies are flying around in the mountains.

I just wonder if they really catch so many that it affects the butterfly population.

CAROL: Who knows? Hey, I like these jade bears here.

JOHN: How much are they?

CAROL: This one is 2300 dollars.

Maybe I should buy it for my mother. What do you think?

JOHN: If you want. Didn't you buy her a small vase already?

CAROL: Yes, but she would like this a lot. She likes to collect little things like this.

JOHN: Alright. Buy it then.

I won't buy anything. Well, maybe I'll buy some Cognac.

CAROL: Maybe I could buy some Cognac for my brother. He always drinks it.

JOHN: Let's go ask about it.

DEREK: You won't believe what just happened.

KELLY: What?

DEREK: I went down to change some money, right?

KELLY: Yes. We need some. How much did you change?

DEREK: I wanted to change around 5000 dollars. And you know the exchange rate.

KELLY: Yes, it's about 35 pesos for every Taiwan dollar, right?

DEREK: Not today.

KELLY: What do you mean?

DEREK: I went into the bank with my money, and I looked at the exchange board.

At first I couldn't believe it. I thought I was reading the board wrong or something.

KELLY: Why?

DEREK: Because the board said 60 pesos for every Taiwan dollar.

KELLY: Sixty? That's too much. How can that be?

DEREK: I thought it was wrong too. It didn't make sense.

KELLY: Just two days ago it was 35. How can it be 60?

DEREK: So, I went up to the teller and started to exchange the money. And it's true.

They really gave me sixty pesos for the dollar.

KELLY: That's amazing! Really? How could it change so much in two days?

DEREK: I tried to ask the bank teller why it changed,

but she didn't speak English well enough.

So I decided to go to the magazine shop. The one around the corner.

And I bought an American newspaper.

KELLY: What happened?

DEREK: It seems that yesterday the Mexican government declared

it wouldn't pay back the loans it got from the World Bank.

The government declared a default on the loans.

KELLY: That's serious.

DEREK: I know. The economy here is having serious problems.

But because the government declared a default, the currency value went way down.

KELLY: So now Mexican pesos are worth about half as much.

DEREK: Yes, it's an amazing drop.

KELLY: Wow. I feel sorry for the Mexicans. But it's good for us.

DEREK: Yes, it's very good. We suddenly have twice as much money to spend here.

Our hotel is now half as expensive as when we got here! Isn't that strange?

KELLY: Yes, and you know what?

DEREK: What?

KELLY: I don't really like this hotel that much.

So tonight, now that we are so rich,

tonight why don't we stay in the most expensive hotel in town?

DEREK: Why not? We should do it. Because now we can afford it.

KELLY: I hope the food here is good.

SANDY: Yes, it is very expensive. Maybe we shouldn't have come here.

KELLY: But the guidebook says a lot of the stars come here.

If we are spending three days in Hollywood, I want to see at least one star.

SANDY: I think we might not see any.

KELLY: Did you like the tour of Universal Studios?

SANDY: I thought it was O.K. But it really was too hot.

And I think they should show people more. The exhibits should be more interesting.

KELLY: I thought it was great. Didn't you like the special effects rooms?

SANDY: Yes, but I still think it could be better.

KELLY: You are too picky.

SANDY: No, I'm not.

Hey, look at that guy over there.

KELLY: Which guy?

SANDY: The guy in the blue shirt at the table by the window.

KELLY: I can't see him. Where?

SANDY: Right there.

KELLY: Oh, I see him now. Wait! That's……

SANDY: Yes, it's Mel Gibson.

KELLY: Oh, wow! It's really him! Who is that woman he's with?

SANDY: I don't know. Why don't you go ask for his autograph?

KELLY: I can't do that.

SANDY: Why not?

KELLY: It's is just…… It's just too silly.

SANDY: You're too shy.

KELLY: I'm not shy. I just think it would be rude. He's eating lunch.

SANDY: Oh, well. He's looking at us now. Maybe he will ask for our autographs.

KELLY: Oh, I hope so! I would love to be in a movie with him.

SANDY: You really are starstruck, aren't you?

KELLY: I was only joking!
