About Youth关于青春
One half of time indeed is flown—the other half remains in store for us with all its countlesstreasures, for there is no line drawn, and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes.
We make the coming age our own—the vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us.
Death, old age are words without a meaning that pass by us like the idea air which we regardnot.
Others may have undergone, or may still be liable to them—we "bear a charmed life", whichlaughs to scorn all such sickly fancies. As in setting out on delightful journey, we strain oureager gaze forward—bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail!
And see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance.
So, in the commencement of life, we set no bounds to our inclinations, nor to the unrestrictedopportunities of gratifying them.
We have as yet found no obstacle, no disposition to flag; and it seems that we can go on soforever.
We look round in a new world, full of life, and motion, and ceaseless progress; and feel inourselves all the vigor and spirit to keep pace with it, and do not foresee from any presentsymptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things, decline into old age, anddrop into the grave.
It is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedness of our feelings in youth, that identifies uswith nature, and deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it.
Our short lives connexion with existence we fondly flatter ourselves is an indissoluble andlasting union—a honeymoon that knows neither coldness, jar, nor separation.
As infants smile and sleep, we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies, and lulled intosecurity by the roar of the universe around us—we quaff the cup of life with eager hastewithout draining it, instead of which it only overflows the more objects press around us,fillingthe mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them,so that wehave no room for the thoughts of death.

You are Fortunate
In 1982 Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck somethingand sank. He was out of the shipping lanes and floating in a life raft, alone. His supplies werefew. His chances were small. Yet when three fishermen found him seventy-six days later, he wasalive - much skinnier than he was when he started, but alive. When people survive these kindsof circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keepgoing. Many people in similarly desperate circumstances give in or go mad. Something thesurvivors do with their thoughts helps them find the guts to carry on in spite ofoverwhelming odds. "I tell myself I can handle it," wrote Callahan in his narrative. "
Compared to what others have been through, I'm fortunate. I tell myself these things over andover, building up fortitude…" I wrote that down after I read it. It struck me as somethingimportant. And I've told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed far off or when myproblems seemed too overwhelming. And every time I've said it, I have always come back tomy senses. The truth is, our circumstances are only bad compared to something better. Butothers have been through much worse. I've read enough history to know you and I are lucky tobe where we are, when we are, no matter how bad it seems to us compared to our fantasies. It's a sane thought and worth thinking. So here, coming to us from the extreme edge ofsurvival, are words that can give us strength. Whatever you're going through, tell yourself youcan handle it. Compared to what others have been through, you're fortunate. Tell this toyourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with a little morefortitude.

Opportunity
The air we breathe is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. For the most part, the same air is available to everyone, and everyone needs it. Some people use the air to sustain them while they sit around and feel sorry for themselves. Others breathe in the air and use the energy it provides to make a magnificent life for themselves.
Opportunity is the same way. It is everywhere. Opportunity is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet opportunity alone is not enough to create success. Opportunity must be seized and acted upon in order to have value. So many people are so anxious to "get in" on a "ground floor opportunity", as if the opportunity will do all the work. That's impossible. Just as you need air to breathe, you need opportunity to succeed. It takes more than just breathing in the fresh air of opportunity, however. You must make use of that opportunity. That's not up to the opportunity. That's up to you. It doesn't matter what "floor" the opportunity is on. What matters is what you do with it.
