King Canute on the Seashore

Long ago, England was ruled by a king named Canute. Like many leaders and men of power, Canute was surrounded by people who were always praising him. Every time he walked into a room, the flattery began.

"You are the greatest man that ever lived," one would say.

Then another would insist, "O king! There can never be another man so mighty as you,"

And someone would smile and say,‘Your highness, there is nothing you cannot do."

"Great Canute, you are the monarch of all," another would sing. "Nothing in this world dares to disohey you."

The king was a man of senses, and he grew tired of hearing such foolish speeches.

One day he was walking by the seashore, and his officers and courtiers were with him, praising him as usual. Canute decided to teach them a lesson, so he bade them set his chair on the beach close by the edge of the water.

"So you say I am the greatest man in the world?" he asked.

"O king," they cried, "there never has been anyone as powerful as you, and there never be anyone so great, ever again!"

"And you say all things obey me'?" Canute asked.

"Absolutely!" they said. "The world bows before you, and gives you honor."

"I see”the king answered."In that case. bring me my chair, and we will go down to the water."

"At once, your majesty!" They scrambled to carry his royal chair over the sands.

"Bring it closer to the sea," Canute called. "Put it right here, right at the water's edge."He sat down and surveyed the ocean before him. "I notice the tide is coming in. Do you think it will stop if I give the command'?"

His officers were puzzled, but they did not dare say no. "Give the order, O great king, and it will obey," one of then assured him.

"Very well. Sea," cried Canute, "I command you to come no further! Waves, stop your rolling! Surf, stop your pounding! Do not dare touch my feet!"

He waited a moment, quietly, and a tiny wave rushed up the sand and lapped at his feet.

"How dare you!" Canute shouted. "Ocean, turn back now! I have ordered you to retreat before me, and now you must obey! Go back!"

And in answer another wave swept forward and curled around the king's feet. The tide came in, just as it always did. The water rose higher and higher. It came up around the king's chair, and wet not only his feet, but also his robe. His officers stood before him, alarmed, and wondering whether he was not mad.

"Well, my friends," Canute said, "it seems I do not have quite so much power as you would have me believe. Perhaps you have learned something today. Perhaps now you will remember there is only one King who is all-powerful, and it is he who rules the sea, and holds the ocean in the hollow of his hand. I suggest you reserve your praises for him."

The royal officers and courtiers hung their heads and looked foolish. And some say Canute took off his crown soon afterward, and never wore it again.

The Giving Tree

Once there was a tree…and she loved a little boy. Every day the boy would come and he would gather her leaves and make them into crowns and play king of the forest. He would climb up her trunk and swing from her branches and eat apples. And they would play hide-and-go-seek. And when he was tired, he would sleep in her shade. And the boy loved the tree very much….And the tree was happy.

But time went by. The boy grew older, and the tree was often alone.

Then one day the boy came to the tree and the tree said."Come, Boy, come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and eat my apples and play in my shade and be happy."

"I am too big to climb and play." said the boy. "1 want to buy things and have fun. I want some money. Can you give me some money?"

"I'm sorry," said the tree, "but I have no money. I have only leaves and apples. Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in the city. Then you will have money and you will be happy."

And so the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her apples and carried them away.

And the tree was happy.

But the boy stayed away for a long time…and the tree was sad.

And then one day the boy came back and the tree shook with joy and she said, "Come,Boy, climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and be happy."

I am too busy to climb trees," said the boy. "I want a house to keep me warm," he said. "I want a wife and I want children, and so I need a house. C an you give me a house?"

"I have no house," said the tree. "The forest is my house, but you may cut my branches and build a house. Then you will be happy."

And so the boy cut off her branches and carried them away to build his house. And the tree was happy. But the boy stayed away for a long time.

And when he came back, the tree was so happy that she could hardly speak. "Come,Boy," she whispered, "come and play."

"I am too old and sad to play," said the boy. "I want a boat that will take me far away from here. Can you give me a boat?"

"Cut down my trunk and make a boat," said the tree. "Then you can sail away and be happy.”

And so the boy cut down her trunk and made a boat and sailed away.

And the tree was happy...but not really.

And after a long time the boy came back again, "I am sorry, Boy," said the tree,‘but I have nothing left to give you-my apples are gone."

“My teeth are too weak for apples," said the boy.

"My branches are gone," said the tree. "You cannot swing on them -”

"I am too old to swing on branches," said the boy.

“My trunk is gone," said the tree. "You cannot climb-"

"I am too tired to climb," said the boy.

"I am sorry," sighed the tree. "I wish that I could give you something…but I have nothing left. I am just an old stump. I am sorry…"

"I don't need very much now," said the boy,"just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am very tired."

"Well," said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could, "Well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting. Come Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest."

And the boy did.

And the tree was happy.

Hanging Up an Ox but Selling a Horse悬牛卖马

One day, Ling Gong, King of the State of Qi, had a sudden whim. He liked to see women wearing men's clothes and let all the women in his harem do so.

Soon afterwards, all the women in the whole country followed

the fashion and dressed like men.

Seeing the whole country follow this example, Ling Gong became angry, and gave orders to the officials in all parts of the ountry:

"Whenever you see women dressed like men, you are to tear up their clothes and rip their waistbands."

But this trend among women to dress like men couldn't be

discouraged.

One day, when the prime minister Yan Zi came to court for an audience with him, Ling Gong asked him:

"I ordered all the officials to forbid women to wear men's

clothes. Whenever they see them doing so, they are to tear up their clothes and rip their waistbands without exception. But this trend couldn't be stopped. What exactly is the reason?"

Yan Zi answered:

"Your Majesty, you allow the women in your harem to dress like men, but you forbid the common people to do so. This is like hanging up the head of an ox outside the door, but selling horsemeat inside. How can that be done? If women in your harem are rorbidden to wear men's clothes, then how would the people outside the palace dare to do so any longer?"

Ling Gong nodded his head again and again, and said:

"What you have said is right! What you have said is right!"

Ling Gong ordered his officials to do according to what Yan Zi had said. Sure enough, in less than one month, the trend of dressing like men among women in the whole country was stopped.
