The Ding family in the State of Song had no well of its own. someone in the family sometimes had to spend a whole day doing nothing but fetch water from a distance. To solve the trouble they had a well sunk in their courtyard.

After the job was finished, they said to one another happily, “It seems with the sinking of the well one more person is added to our family.”

One of Ding’s friends heard of the remark and passed the word from the friend to the friend and yet to another, until the story ran as the follow words, “The Dings had a well sunk and found a man inside!”

When the Duke of Song heard the tale, he sent for Ding to inquire into the matter.

With the sinking of the well it is as if your obedient servant has had the help of a man,” explained Ding to the Duke. “It doesn’t mean that I actually found a man in the well.”

Many ages had now passed away since the phoenix had been seen in the world. At last he again appeared. Imme-diately all the different kinds of animals, both birds and beasts, flocked around him.

Astonished at his beauty, they stared and admired, and broke out into great praise, but in a short time, the wisest and most prudent among them began to look upon him with an eye of sympathy, and they sighed, “O unhappy phoenix! Fate has been hard to him. He has neither sweetheart nor friend. He will never know the pleasure of loving, or of being loved.”

A philosophical mouse spoke loudly in praise of nature’s goodness for having made the mice such particular objects of her concern and protection.

“For,” she said, “one half of us is provided by her with wings, so that if all here below were killed by cats, she could easily restore our extinguished race by means of the bats.”

The good little mouse didn’t know that there were also flying cats and thus does our pride chiefly rest on ignorance.
