One day, King Tang, the founder of the Shang Dynasty, sawa man arranging a net on all sides and praying to the deity:
"Let those that fly down from the sky, those that come out of the ground, and those that come running from all directions all run into my net!"
Tang said:
"Well, isn't this catching the whole lot in one net?"
Tang went forward and took away the net on three sides, leaving only one side there. Then he said to the man:
"Now please pray again! You can say thus: In the past, the spiders have spun nets. Now people have learned to make nets too. You birds and animals, those that want to turn left can go to the left; those that want to turn right can go to the right; those that want to fly can soar; those that want to get into holes can get into holes. I only catch those that are doomed to die."
The much-told tale of King Tang's leaving the net open on three sides spread far and wide at once. When the people of the states south of the Han River heard of it, they all said:
"King Tang of Shang bestows favour even upon birds and animals. He is so lenient that he is truly a benevolent man."
Thereupon, all the 40 small states of the time had a heartfelt admiration for Tang and pledged their allegiance to the Shang Dynasty.
In the past, there was a man who had a large appetite. When he ate, he devoured ravenously.
Once he wasn't careful enough so that a fishbone got stuck in his throat. The food was blocked in his esophagus, and he could neither swallow nor vomit. So he called a physician, but the physician could do nothing. The people around looked at him in anxiety. Finally, as he couldn't breathe, he died of choking.
Afterwards, someone went so far as to issue a ban: Eating is forbidden as from today for the reason that no one will be choked to death if people give up eating.
One day in the year 489 B.C., Confucius led his disciples to the State of Cai via the State of Chen. When they passed by the State of Chen, they were surrounded by the people of Chen.
For seven days and nights in succession, they hadn't eaten one grain of rice. They were so hungry that they couldn't get up from bed.
Later, after much effort, one of his disciples Yan Hui somehow obtained some rice. The rice was washed and cooked, and when it was almost done, Yan Hui suddenly stretched out his hand to grab a handful of rice from the steamer, put it into his mouth and swallowed it.
Confucius, lying at a distance, saw all this by chance, but pretended that he had seen nothing and didn't say a word.
After a while the rice was done. Yan Hui respectfully came to Confucius and asked him to take his meal.
Confucius slowly sat up in his bed and said to Yan Hui:
"A short while ago I had a dream. I dreamed of my deceased father. If the rice is clean, I would like to make a sacrificial offer to him."
Yan Hui replied hurriedly:
"Master, the rice is not clean, and it's unfit for sacrifice."
He then continued:
"Some soot has just fallen into the steamer and soiled the rice. It is a pity to throw the rice away, so I picked out the sooted rice and ate it."
Confucius suddenly saw the light. He sighed and said:
"It goes without saying that one can trust one's own eyes. But now it seems that one's eyes cannot be trusted entirely. It goes without saying that one can trust one's own mind, but now it seems that one's own mind cannot be trusted entirely either. Disciples, keep this in mind: It is not easy to thoroughly understand a person after all."
