I first started playing the piano when I was three. My parents are musicians, so they both encouraged me to do so. It was their dream, I think, to raise a child who could one day become a world-class pianist. So they asked an expensive personal teacher to teach me, and I practiced every day, sometimes for five or six hours at a time. Despite(尽管) the long hours and frustration(懊恼), I did enjoy it, especially at first, and I was good. According to my parents and my teacher, I was really excellent, and I was on the road to becoming a professional musician, just like my mother and father.

The trouble was that my heart wasn’t really in it. My real interest was something quite different – mathematics. Numbers were the things that really shone brightly in my mind. I told my parents I found more beauty in a mathematical equation (等式) than in a piano sonata. So when I went to college, I chose to study mathematics, not music. Then I got a job, working as an accountant(会计).

Now I work with numbers every day. My parents couldn’t understand, and even now I guess they are still angry with me. They say I wasted a special gift (天赋). But I still believe what I did is right for me.

Many stories about famous people are not based on facts. A story that is passed from mouth to mouth may be better in the end than it was in the beginning, but probably it will end up as a very different story. Each storyteller may change something.

A man who tells a story does not always try to be accurate(准确的). He may not believe that facts are necessary in a story. He may want to make people laugh or make them cry; he may even want to make them think.

A good story may live through many centuries, and millions of people may enjoy telling it or listening to it. It is not the accuracy of a story that makes it live. The value of a story does not come from its accuracy but from its human interest or the way it is told.

An English writer wrote a new book, and his publisher(出版人) told him that a thousand copies had already been sold. That evening, the writer had a meal with his publisher and an American friend. They talked about the book, and the writer told the American that 10,000 copies had been sold. Later, the publisher asked the writer why he had not been more accurate. “ To an American,” said the writer, “ a thousand is nothing. I multiplied the number by ten to give him a true idea of the success of the book.” This writer was not famous for his accuracy but for his novels will probably live for a long time.

50. It is thought that ______.

A. a written story should be true to what was really told from mouth to mouth

B. a story told from mouth to mouth is worse than it was in the beginning

C. stories about people are sometimes easier to pass on

D. a story is usually different from what it was like in the beginning

51. Where does the value of a story lie?

A. In its accuracy.

B. In the way the story has been told.

C. In how long the story has been told.

D. In how many people have told the story.

52. The writer wanted to _______ when he multiplied the number by ten.

A. show he was quick-minded

B. show he was very proud

C. bring out the true idea of his success

D. impress the American

53. The best title for this passage might be ______.

A. Accuracy and interest of stories

B. The changing of facts

C. Be a good storyteller

D. How to tell a story

(C)

New rules and behavior standards (行为规范)for middle school students came out in March. Middle school is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won’t only have high marks. They will also be kids who don’t dye (染) their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules.

Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else’s work on an exam? Don’t do it again! That’s not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don’t tell your parents you have done homework.

Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird—Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate? You should join! That way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone.

Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when our basketball lost? Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others, not only yourself.

Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you’ll discover Earth Ⅱ someday. Don’t look down on new ideas. Everyone’s ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.

Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don’t let it happen to you. If you have to go home late you should let your parents know.

Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren’t for kids, so try to look at Web pages that are good for you. You can use the Web for fun or homework. Can’t you find any good Web sites for children? Here are some:

//kids.eastday.com //www.chinakids.net.com //www.cycnet.com

54.The school new rules will help kids by telling them ______.

A. how they can study well B. what they should do at school

C. what is right and what is wrong D. how they can protect themselves

55 .According to the passage, which of the following is not true?

A. Take care of yourself when you are out.

B. Tell the truth, even when you are wrong.

C. Keep some animals to protect them.

D. Use the Internet, but keep away from bad things.

56. The main idea of the fourth paragraph is about ______.

A. making the team stronger B. working together with others

One possible version :

Learn to smile

Smile is an attitude to life. In our life, there may be something unpleasant. For example, you fail in an exam; or another time, you are misunderstood by your friends. These unpleasant things may make you feel bad. Then what will you do? Why not learn to smile? Smiling to yourself can bring back your confidence. Sometimes, the greatest enemy is yourself. That is to say, sometimes you are beaten by yourself. We should also learn to smile others. It will help us to get closer to others. So, smile is the most widely used language in our life.
