Toward the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty(25-220), state power fell into Dong Zhuo's hand, a very cruel and manipulating person. Yuan Shao, the leader of an opposition force, led apunitive(惩罚性的) expedition to Luoyang, the capital. Dong Zhuo sent a very battlewise general named Hua Xiong to meet the expedition army. Hua killed several generals in run from Yuan Shao's side. Guan Yu volunteered to meet Hua Xiong, saying if he failed to kill him he would kill himself. At this, Cao Cao, in admiration, poured a cup of heated wine for Guan Yu for encouragement. But Guan said, "Keep the cup here until I come back." When Guan Yu returned with Hua Xiong's head, the wine in the cup was still warm. Dong Zhuo was alarmed at the news that his brave general Hua Xiong had been killed.

He dispatched Lv Bu with 150,000 troops to guard the Hulao Pass outside the capital. Yuan Shao sent eight armies to attack. When the two sides met, no generals from Yuan Shao's side seemed able to withstand Lv Bu, several generals had been killed by him. Zhang Fei charged Lv Bu, but after fifty rounds of fierce combats he still did not succeed. At the sight of his sworn brother Zhang Fei unable to gain an upper hand, Guan Yu lifted his crescent-moon shaped sword to join the battle. After thirty more rounds, their elder sworn brother, Liu Bei unsheathed(抽出鞘) his sword and charged up too. The three brothers closed in. This proved too much for Lv Bu, whofeigned a lance attack and while one of the three dodged, ran back to Hulao Pass for his dear life.

Zhuge Liang led 300,000 Shu State troops in a march towards Chencang, the vital communication stronghold(要塞,据点) of the Wei State. It was his second expedition against the Wei State. Hao Zhao, the general guarding the city dug the trenches deep and built thefortress(堡垒) strong. He waited for the attack. Everyday, Zhuge Liang sent soldiers to challenge the Wei army in battle, but the Wei troops held fast to their position and refused to come out.

One day, a scout(侦察兵) came back to report that Hao Zhao was seriously ill. Zhuge Liang thought that the chance had come at last. He ordered Wei Yan and Jiang Wei to take 5,000 troops and surround Chencang in three days. They were to attack the city when they saw a fire inside the city. After that, he gave Guan Xing and Zhang Bao secret instructions. As the health of the Wei State general Hao Zhao was deteriorating(退化,恶化) , suddenly it was reported to Hao Zhao that the troops from Shu State had arrived outside the city. Hao Zhao hurriedly ordered officers and soldiers to defend the city in their position. Unexpectedly, a fire broke out on each of the city's towers. There was chaos inside the city. Hao Zhao was frightened to death. The troops of the Shu State smashed all enemy resistance and advanced into the city.

Three days later when Wei Yan and Jiang Wei led their troops to the gate of the city, they heard somebody shouting from the top of the city wall, "You have come too late!" The two generalsfixed their eyes upon the person. It was the Prime Minister of the Shu State, Zhuge Liang. The two generals got down from their horses hastily and saluted. Zhuge Liang said, "The reason that I asked you to attack the city in three days is to keep the doldiers calm. In fact, Ihad already sent Guan Xing and Zhang Bao to secretly leave the center area of Han the same night as I ordered you. By disguising myself, I hid among the soldiers and set out for Chencang by starlight. We gave the enemy a surprise attack. The fire was set on at my instruction and it threw the city into confusion. This is called 'taking the enemy by surprise and striking when it is unprepared'."

At Cao Cao's instruction, Liu Bei was about to set off for a punitive(惩罚的) expedition against Yuan Shu. Before he left, Liu Bei worried about the defence of Xuzhou City. When Zhang Fei volunteered to take the task, Liu said, "How can I feel assured, when you're so fond of drinking and after drinking you always flog(鞭打) your soldiers for no reason. And you're such a hot-tempered person and frequently you refuse to take advice." He entrusted the task upon Zhang only after the latter's repeated entreatments and resolutions to mend his ways. For safety, he left consultant Chen Deng to assist Zhang.

One day Zhang invited his subordinate officers over. "My elder brother instructed me before he left to stay away from wine for fear I may fail my duties to guard the city. Let's have an final drinking party today, and starting from tomorrow, we will quit drinking and concentrate on the job." With these words said, he began toasting everyone.

When neither of his toasts was accepted by Cao Bao, Zhang flared up. By then , Zhang was already drunk. He had Cao flogged fifty times. After the party was over, the resentful Cao sent one of his men to Lv Bu, the enemy general, asking him to attack the city that night while Zhang was drunk.

Lv came with 500 horsemen. They successfully took the city. When Zhang woke up with a start, the city was gone. He fought his way out of the enemy troops and fled the city, leaving his elder brother's family behind. When he met Liu, he felt so shame-faced that he unsheathed(拔出鞘)his sword meaning to commit suicide, only to be stopped by his elder brother.
