关于名人英语美文:读书之乐
All the wisdom of the ages, all the stories that have delighted mankind for centuries, are easily and cheaply available to all of us within the covers of books but we must know how to avail ourselves of this treasure and how to get the most from it.The most unfortunate people in the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books.
I am most interested in people, in them and finding out about them. Some of the most remarkable people I’ve met existed only in a writer’s imagination, then on the pages of his book, and then, again, in my imagination.I’ve found in books new friends, new societies, new words.
If I am interested in people, others are interested not so much in who as in how.Who in the books includeseverybody from science fiction superman two hundred centuries in the future all the way back to the first figures in history. How covers everything from the ingenious explanations of Sherlock Holmes to the discoveries of science and ways of teaching manner to children.
Reading is pleasure of the mind, which means that it is a little like a sport:your eagerness and knowledgeand quickness make you a good reader. Reading is fun,not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work.Your own imagination works along with the author’s or even goes beyond his.Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.
Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate, together they all add up to something, they are connected with each other and with other cities. The same ideas, or related ones, turn up in different places;the human problems that repeatthemselves in life repeat themselves in literature, but with different solutions according to different writings at different times.Books influence each other; they link the past, the present and the future and have their own generations, like families.Wherever you start reading you connect yourself with one of the families of ideas, and in the long run,you not only find out about the world and the people in it; you find out about yourself, too.
Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate on books somebody tells you you “ought”to read, you probably won’t have fun. But if you put down a book you don’t like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it, you will almost certainly have a good tim and if you become, as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or more gentle, you won’t have suffered during the process.
关于名人英语美文:葛底斯堡演说
Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now, we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation,or any nation soconceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of thatwar. We have come to dedicate a portionof that field as a final resting-place for those who heregave their lives that that nation might live. Itis altogether fitting and proper that we should dothis.
But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate,we cannot consecrate,we cannot hallow, thisground. The bravemen, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above ourpower to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it cannever forget what they did here.It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated here to theunfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather forus to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us,that from these honored deadwe take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure ofdevotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall no have died in vain; that thisnation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom;and that government of the people, by thepeople, and for thepeople, shall not perish from the earth.
关于名人英语美文:爱美
The love of beauty is an essential part of all healthy human nature. It is a moral quality.Theabsence of it is not an assured ground of condemnation, but the presence of it is aninvariable sign of goodness of heart. In proportion to the degree in which it is felt willprobably be the degree in which nobleness and beauty of character will be attained.
Natural beauty is an all pervading presence. The universe is its temple. It unfolds into thenumberless flowers of spring. It waves in the branches of trees and the green blades of grass. It haunts the depths of the earth and the sea. It gleams from the hues of the shell and theprecious stone. And not only these minute objects but the oceans, the mountains, the clouds, the stars, the rising and the setting sun - all overflow with beauty. This beauty is soprecious, and so congenial to our tenderest and noblest feelings, that it is painful to think ofthe multitude of people living in the midst of it and yet remaining almost blind to it.
All persons should seek to become acquinted with the beauty in nature. There is not a wormwe tread upon, nor a leaf that dances merrily as it falls before the autumn winds, but calls forour study and admiration. The power to appreciate beauty not merely increases our sourcesof happiness -it enlarges our moral nature, too. Beauty calms our restlessness and dispels ourcares. Go into the fields or the woods, spend a summer day by the sea or the mountains, andall your little perplexities and anxieties will vanish. Listen to sweet music, and your foolish fearsand petty jealousies will pass away. The beauty of the world helps us to seek and find thebeauty of goodness.
