Part Four: Monologue
Carl’s Note:
Americans often go to their doctor and dentists when they are not sick. They hope to prevent being sick by having their teeth cleaned and their health checked. Therefore, they see the doctor and dentist for check-ups. Doctors check their breathing, heartbeat, ears, eyes, and throat, their weight, take samples of patient’s fluids to run tests, and look for signs of more serious illnesses. Dentists clean a patient’s teeth, and take x-rays to see if any teeth are going bad. More and more, Americans and the people who take care of their health are practicing this kind of preventive medicine.

Part Four: Monologue
Carl’s Note:
Since it is played on ice, ice hockey is popular in Canada and the northern parts of the United States. It is a lot like soccer, but because it is played on ice skates and on a smaller playing area, it is much faster and more violent. For example, it is legal to force another player into the wall of the ice rink. This is called checking. The offense uses a stick with a flat blade one end to try to put a small, hard, rubber disk, called the puck, into the defense’s net. Professional hockey players can shoot the puck at over 100 miles per hour, so the goalies have to wear heavy pads and a hard plastic mask to prevent injuries. Hockey is a very exciting game to watch and play.

Part Four: Monologue
“Sexually transmitted disease, or STD, is a serious social problem facing the world today. Fortunately, education can do a lot to control this problem. Education is particularly important for diseases such as AIDS and herpes, for which no cure exists. We must educate our society’s sexually active citizens to prevent the spread of these diseases. At the very least, we should make it clear that the use of a condom during sex will keep people from getting these diseases. We should also try to calm people’s fears. For example, we must make it clear they cannot get AIDS by doing certain things, such as kissing or sharing a meal. We cannot guarantee that people will listen, but the effort must be made to let them know what the dangers are, and how to prevent them.”
——Dr. Anne Motts U.S. Center for Disease Control
