A

Sydney is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and the 2000 Olympic Games put it on the map as one of the most lively and modern c ities in the world. Any trip to Sydney is an adventure and with some of the world's most beautiful beaches, this city has so much to offer. Sydney is so large an area that choosing a hotel is something you need to do very carefully. Public transport is good, but it can be slow and being close to where you want to be is probably the most important factor.

The first and most obvious choice is hotels around Circular Quay. Circular Quay is the heart of the city and one of the major interchanges where trains, buses and ferries meet. It's also where Sydney's two most famous landmarks are located — the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. This area is active and offers some of the best views you will ever get from a hotel room.

The farther hotels in the city are much more suited to business travelers and they are usually less expensive. Darling Harbor is a great choice as it mixes a great view with being right in the centre of the city. Darling Harbor has hundreds of pubs, clubs and restaurants along the water's edge.

If you don't feel like dealing with the hustle_and_bustle of the city and are looking for something a bit quieter, why not head out to the Northern Beaches. It's only a short ferry ride over to Manly where you can find two major hotels on the beach with a number of smaller boutiques

Long long ago, there lived two brothers in a village. Their parents died and left them a farm. The elder son took everything except for a very small piece of land, a cat and a dog. The younger son had to use the cat and the dog to pull his plough (犁) because he did not have an ox (牛). They did not like this at all and cried out.

Near the farm, there was a mountain called Stone Mountain. A demon (魔鬼) lived on this mountain and people who looked at it carefully could see his face. When the Demon of Stone Mountain heard the cat and the dog crying out, he looked down. He thought a cat and a dog looked funny pulling a plough. He opened his mouth and laughed.

The younger son heard the demon's laughter. He looked up and saw inside the demon's huge, open mouth, it was full of gold and silver. Quickly, he ran up the mountain and hurried inside the demon's mouth. There, he collected a little of the gold and silver and then hurried out again. Now he could buy himself a house, a larger piece of land and an ox to pull his plough.

His brother soon found out what had happened. He immediately got the cat and the dog and used them to pull his plough near Stone Mountain. Once again, the demon opened his mouth to laugh at the sight of a cat and a dog pulling a plough. Quickly, the elder brother ran into the demon's mouth and began filling his bags with gold and silver.

He was so busy that he forgot about the cat and the dog, and it was not long before the two animals lay down to rest. As soon as this happened, the Demon of Stone Mountain stopped laughing and closed his mouth. The elder brother was kept inside and was never seen again.

I sat at my seat waiting for the school paper to be passed around. I waited anxiously, knowing that once I received it I would know how good a writer I really am.

When the paper arrived at my classroom, I nearly knocked down five of my classmates to get to the first paper. With a school paper in my hands, I r eturned to my seat. About a month earlier, I had handed in one of, what I believed to be, my best stories. I named it Symbol of Success. The head of the English Department at my school, Professor Cullen had said that she would include some reviews of students' stories in the latest school paper. Professor Cullen was known for her rough criticism. Impressing her was very hard but I wanted to be the first to do so.

I sat at the edge of my seat as I read through the other story reviews. There wasn't one story that got more than three stars. I became calm and wasn't anxious to know my review. It was long after that I heard someone shout out “Five stars?! Seriously!” from behind me. I turned around and saw the shocked expression of Gene's face, “Peter, your story got five stars!” I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I turned my attention back to my story and saw the five stars at the end of the review that I had not read yet. I looked through the review written by Professor Cullen. She wrote that I had a gift for story writing.

I was proud that I achieved what I thought was impossible. For so long I believed I wasn't as good as I thought I was and that my talent was not enough to cover up my lack of writing skills. But this review proved that I was truly a good writer and that there was a future ahead of me in the field of fiction writing. The review and the five stars meant the world to me. Those five stars became the symbol of my success.

46.How did the writer get the school paper?

A. His teacher gave it to him first.

B. The publisher sent it to him first.

C. His friend helped him get the first one.

D. He rushed ahead to get the first one by himself.

47.What can we learn about Professor Cullen?

A. She was very gentle to everyone.

B. She seldom praised her students.

C. She was very cold to her students.

D. She was respected by her students.

48.We can learn from this text that Peter ________.

A. had thought his story was better than those of others

B. was always anxious to know the review about him

C. didn't know he got five stars until others told him

D. looked through a few stories that had got four stars

49.What did Professor Cullen think of Peter's story?

A. She thought highly of it.

B. She thought it was just soso.

C. She thought it was extremely bad.

D. She doubte d if it was written by him.

50.Why did the review and the five stars mean the world to Peter?

A. Because they helped him learn writing skills.

B. Because they made him happy for some time.

C. Because they helped him enter a key university.

D. Because they made him see his writing talents.

Dear_Li_Hua,

I_am_glad_to_know_that_you_are_going_to_study_in_Canada,_so_I_am_writing_to_tell_you_something_about_this_country. Canada is the world's second largest country with an area of 9.98 million square kilometers. It has the largest number of lakes which provide more fresh water than any other country in the world. It is generally cold with a lot of snow in long winters. I suggest that you (should) choose to study in the west, where there aren't so many international students and the tuition is lower. Vancouver is a good choice, for it is Canada's warmest and most beautiful city, surrounded by mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

Best wishes.

Yours_sincerely,

Yang_Ning
