Perfectionism is seen as laudable. But research shows it has a flip side, causing not just psychological stress, but physical harm—insomnia, heart disease.

Dr Danielle Molnar, a psychologist at Brock University, Canada, is suggesting perfectionism should be considered as a risk factor for disease in the same way as obesity and smoking.

"It's natural to want to be a perfectionist in one area of your life, but when it becomes obsessive, it will cause extreme stress and can affect not only relationships, but also your health."

文中的perfectionism就是“完美主义”的意思,是由名词perfection(完美)和词缀-ism(一般表示为“主义,行为”)组合而成,又如:reformism(改革主义),protectionism(贸易保护主义)等;需要注意的是,perfection表示“完美,完善”时,是不可数名词,如:His performance was sheer perfection.(他的表演达到了尽善尽美的地步。)

If I drink too much coffee, I will have insomnia.(咖啡喝多了,我就会失眠。)
