Crossing the Han River
Li Pin
Beyond the mountain there came no tidings and letters;
Winter passed, and then went Spring.
As I near my village my heart grows more afraid,
And I dare not inquire of those that come to meet me.

To "Magnolia"
Ouyang Xiu
After the parting I know not if he is far or near.
What meets the eye is bleak and doleful.
Slowly he journeys, slowly he goes farther, slowly his letters grow fewer.
Broad are the waters, deep swim the fish, where can I ask for him?
In depth of night the wind and bamboos tap out the music of Autumn;
Myriad leaves give a thousand sounds—all are lamentation.
So I choose the solitary pillow in search of dreams,
But dreams come not, and the lamp is guttering out.

Dreaming of the South
Ouyang Xiu
See Southern willow trees
To tender flowers smile with ease!
The fallen petals will adorn your cup of wine;
The willow branches hanging low caress your head,
Each inch a beauty spread.
See the Southern moon look
Now like a mirror, now like a hook:
A mirror in which no rosy faces shine,
A hook on which hangs no curtain red,
It ever shine on sleepless bed.

Ruanlanggui
Ouyang Xiu
Midspring puts one in a festive mood.
One would make excursions, if one could.
A gentle breeze caresses one's face;
Soothing to our ears are horses' neighs.
Green plums have become as large as peas;
Curved like women's brows are willow trees.
The days are longer; the weather, fair.
Butterflies are flying, here and there.
Flowers are heavy with dew, as we pass.
A layer of mist spreading o'er grass.
Curtains o'er windows are closely drawn;
Girls have played on swings with vigor gone.
They have unloosened their silk garments,
Before they take a much-needed rest.
Up on the main beam are two swallows,
Roosting together in the same nest.
