Mother Nature

Nature, the gentlest mother,

Impatient of no child,

The feeblest or the waywardest, --

Her admonition mild

In forest and the hill

By traveler is heard,

Restraining rampant squirrel

Or too impetuous bird.

How fair her conversation,

A summer afternoon, --

Her household, her assembly; 在她的家庭中, 在她的聚会上;

And when the sun goes down 当太阳下山的时候,

Her voice among the aisles

Incites the timid prayer

Of the minutest cricket,

The most unworthy flower.

When all the children sleep

She turns as long away

As will suffice to light her lamps; 就会点亮足够的灯;

Then, bending from the sky

With infinite affection

And infinite care,

Her golden finger on her lip,

Wills silence everywhere.

Life and Song

If life were caught by a clarionet,

And a wild heart, throbbing in the reed, 狂热的心和簧片共振;

Should thrill its joy and trill its fret,

And utter its heart in every deed,

Then would this breathing clarionet

Type what the poet fain would be; 诗人将欣然命笔;

For none o' the singers ever yet

Has wholly lived his minstrelsy,

Or clearly sung his true, true thought,

Or utterly bodied forth his life, 或完全唱他生命之形体,

Or out of life and song has wrought

The perfect one of man and wife;

Or lived and sung, that Life and Song

Might each express the other's all,一切都可以彼此表达,

Careless if life or art were long

Since both were one, to stand or fall:

So that the wonder struck the crowd,

Who shouted it about the land:

His song was only living aloud,

His work, a singing with his hand!

The Road Not Taken

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that, the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I marked the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.
